Are Lab Grown Diamonds Real?
The answer is a very simple yes.
The only thing that makes a lab-grown diamond different from a natural diamond is its origin. A lab-grown diamond is “grown” inside a lab using cutting-edge technology that replicates the natural diamond growing process. The result is a man-made diamond that is chemically, physically, and optically the same as those grown beneath the Earth’s surface.
Sometimes, lab-grown diamonds are referred to as synthetic diamonds. While not technically inaccurate, term “synthetic” may be the reason people believe lab-grown diamonds are “fake.”
If we compare them to other popular diamond simulants, it’s obvious that manufactured diamonds, in fact, are the real deal.
Lab-created Diamonds Vs. Natural Diamonds
Lab-created diamonds are made over the course of several weeks, while natural diamonds take billions of years to form. Lab-grown diamonds are created through a high-temperature carbon growing and compression process. Real diamonds are cut from a rough stone into the shape and carat weight that’s desired. Similarly, once a synthetic diamond is grown, a cutter forms the shape.
Placed side by side, a lab-created and a natural diamond look nearly identical. Lab grown diamonds can be distinguished from natural diamonds only with tests using specialized equipment. Lab created diamonds available for purchase should always come with a gem certification identifying them as laboratory grown.
